The new Ubuntu 6.06 LTS is a nice piece of software. i have it setup on several laptops and desktops, but the interesting thing is my 24" monitor refuses to work with it on my desktop. or at least i thought.
you know how many times i changed my x11.conf file and rebooted X? me either, but it was a ton. I remember about the 3rd day of having it lock up on me i decided it was amaroK. after the 6th day I decided it was firefox. on the 8th day i wrote a complete log of everything that was open and everything i was doing every time it crashed. guess what? complete randomness. yeah. the google machine tells me it was shockwave flash. so i killed it. that didn't work.
well, i am still convinced it is the monitor. mainly because everything was perfect before, or at least as perfect as linux is. i had a 1905, now the 2407. well, due to the graphics card not having acted up before, i never really considered it, but hey, i'm at the end of my rope. so i take a look at the Radeon 9700 in ubuntu. well.....
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install linux-restricted-modules-$(uname -r)
sudo apt-get install xorg-driver-fglrx
sudo depmode -a
sudo aticonfig --initial
sudo aticonfig --overlay-type=Xv
confirm it works by running: fglrx
that fixed it up just fine. haven't had an issue since. oh, except amaroK truly not working on a SMP enabled processor..... lets do that next time =)
